Basic Immunization Recommendations

 
ADULTS

Tetanus/Diphtheria: Current within 10 years—assure that last injection was adult dT.

Hepatitis A Series: US version 2 injections – one now and a booster between 6-12 months.

Hepatitis B Series: 3 injections given at 0, 1, and 6 months. May check Hepatitis B Antibody titer after one year, if inadequate antibodies give one booster injection.

Polio: One adult booster to people who have had childhood series—preferably use Inactivated Polio Vaccine (IPV).

Typhoid: Oral capsule series preferred—1 every other day for 4 doses. Repeat every 5 years. Injection with the new Typhim Vi (ViCPS) vaccine is acceptable, but must repeat every 2 years.

Malaria Medication: As necessary dependent upon area of travel or work.

CHILDREN

Normal childhood immunization series appropriate for the age of the child--should include Hepatitis B series

Typhoid: The recommendations vary with age of the child as to which preparation can be used.
     Phenol-inactivated vaccine: Children age 6 months - 2 years should receive a 2 injection primary series—booster every 3 years.
     Typhim Vi (ViCPS) vaccine: Children 2-6 years of age should receive one injection of Typhim Vi (ViCPS)
     Oral Ty21a Vaccine: Children 6 years or older should receive the oral typhoid vaccine (oral Ty21a)

Hepatitis A Series: Two versions are available in the US—one has 2 doses and the other 3 doses. Both series give good immunity. Recommend the 2-dose version to minimize trauma to child.
